Podil has a great many flats in nineteenth-century buildings and converted lofts. The layouts are anything but standard: high ceilings, tall windows, often one large room instead of two. There is less furniture in such a space, but it is bigger — a corner sofa instead of two ordinary ones, a rug covering half the room instead of a runner.

That matters most on the ground floor and in flats whose windows face an inner courtyard, where the air does not move; the cleaner will suggest leaving a window open until the evening.
